NHIS registers 1.4 million subscribers during Asantehene’s initiative

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registered 1,484,174 subscribers during the King’s Month campaign in honour of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The maiden edition, held throughout May, the month the Asantehene celebrated his 76th birthday, was aimed at increasing enrolment onto the scheme through the registration of new members and renewal of the membership of existing members.

Although the initial target for the exercise was one million, at the end of the month-long exercise, 1,484,174 people were registered, made up of 51,976 new registrations and 1,432,198 renewals.

Briefing

The Ashanti Regional Director of the NHIS, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Muniru, disclosed this at a media briefing in Kumasi last Monday.

The engagement was to inform the public about the outcome of the registration exercise.

He said the milestone could not have been successfully achieved without the confidence, support and encouragement of key stakeholders, particularly the board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

“It is worthy to note the tremendous support of the Manhyia Palace and chiefs across the region was unprecedented. Nananom, we are sincerely grateful and humbled by your immense assistance,” he said.

Similarly, he lauded the staff of the NHIA for their selfless sacrifice and dedication to duty beyond normal working hours, saying, “Indeed, if we were to use normal working hours, it would have been almost impossible to achieve it”.

While commending the media for their pivotal role in terms of coordinated public sensitisation to the exercise, he stated that the King’s Month had come to stay and shall be observed annually during the same period.

Courtesy call

On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the NHIA Board paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene as part of an official visit to the Ashanti Region during which the King’s Month initiative was officially announced.

The delegation was led by the Board Chairman, Lawrence Nii Okantey Adjetey, and included Dr Bernadette Naa Hoffman, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Dr Ken Kwaku Tweneboah Koduah, Pious Kwame Nkuah and the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe.

Make scheme better

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Bampoe announced that the “King’s Month” initiative would run throughout May, offering free NHIS registrations and renewals to people across the region.

He commended the Asantehene for the wise counsel and continuous support, which continued to help shape the scheme and make it better to serve the people.

In a remark, Mr Adjetey indicated that the leadership was doing everything possible to improve the scheme through improvements in the payment of claims for health facilities.

Commendation

Receiving the delegation, the Asantehene commended the management of the NHIA for its efforts at strengthening the scheme and also expressed appreciation for the initiative to offer free registration under the Kings’ Month initiative.

He charged the management to be vigilant and intensify measures to clamp down on illegal charges at hospitals and fraudulent activities to ensure the sustainability of the scheme.
