Police Hospital launches 50th anniversary

The Police Hospital has launched its 50th-anniversary celebrations, with a float aimed at drawing public attention to the hospital’s contributions to healthcare over the years.

The float began at the hospital’s premises, passed through some principal streets of Accra and ended at the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, where they presented him with a picture frame of himself and anniversary attire.

The float later culminated at the 37 Military Hospital.

The float, which took place last Wednesday, drew participation from hospital staff, police officers, healthcare professionals and some members of the public.

The golden jubilee has the theme, “Fifty Years of Excellence: Delivering Quality Healthcare through Discipline, Compassion and Teamwork”.

Celebrations

The anniversary celebrations will be filled with activities leading up to a grand durbar in September.

Activities lined up ahead of the main celebrations include a health walk, a float and an aerobics session, a blood donation exercise, free medical screening and outreach programmes, as well as a clean-up campaign.

Other activities will include the launch of the 50th-anniversary logo, a fundraising dinner, a publicity campaign, staff engagement activities, an inter-hospital sports festival and the planting of 50 trees.

The main anniversary month will feature an exhibition highlighting the hospital’s milestones, an anniversary symposium, a grand durbar and the launch of the legacy project.

There would also be awards and recognition for deserving staff, as well as a thanksgiving service.

Post-anniversary activities will include the commencement of the legacy project, the release of a 50th-anniversary documentary, the publication of a commemorative book and stakeholder appreciation engagements.

Project

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the hospital, Chief Inspector Faustina Afia Nunekpeku, said the hospital would construct a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as its flagship legacy project.

This, she said, aimed at strengthening healthcare and institutional development.

“The project is a high-impact intervention carefully selected to improve specialised care for newborns.  It is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare and leave a lasting institutional legacy,” she said.

She added that the celebrations also aimed to strengthen the hospital’s systems, infrastructure and capacity to meet future healthcare demands, while positioning the institution for the next 50 years.

The Chief Inspector also said the theme reflected the institution’s journey over the years.

She added that discipline, compassion and teamwork had defined healthcare at the hospital for the past five decades.
