Prisons Service, Nigerian Correctional Service collaborate
A delegation from the Nigerian Correctional Service, led by Assistant Controller General Latakile Cham Cyrus, has embarked on a learning exchange visit to Ghana.
The visit focused on prisoner classification and best practices in correctional management.
It was organised in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) at the Ghana Prisons Service Headquarters in Accra.
Upon arrival, the delegation was received with a quarter guard and warmly welcomed by the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.) along with members of the Prisons Directorate.
The delegation, which had since returned home, was taken through key operational areas of the Ghana Prisons Service, including inmate separation and classification systems, legal frameworks, prison healthcare delivery, rehabilitation and reformation programmes, institutional architecture, governance structures, and the service’s strategic direction.
To gain practical insight into the system in Ghana, the delegation toured the Ankaful Prison, the Roman Ridge Prison, and the Nsawam Prison Complex.
It provided the delegation with a firsthand exposure to inmate classification and diagnostic procedures, as well as various rehabilitation programmes being implemented within the facilities.
Beyond correctional operations, the delegation also visited the Elmina Castle and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Museum to deepen their understanding of Ghana’s rich history and the enduring legacy of its first President.
Commendation
The leader of the delegation, ACG Latakile Cham Cyrus, commended the Ghana Prisons Service for its hospitality, professionalism, and commitment to ensuring a seamless and impactful exchange programme.
He said that the Nigerian Correctional Service would seek to adopt and adapt some of the effective practices observed during the visit.
A farewell dinner was later hosted in honour of the delegation at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra, attended by the Director-General and members of the Prisons Directorate.
