Take ownership of environmental sanitation - Ablekuma North MCE urges residents

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma North, Adamu Musa Kalamu, has called on residents to go beyond participating in general clean-up exercises and ensure that their immediate surroundings are always clean.

Mr Kalamu made the call when members of the assembly, led by him, joined residents in a clean-up exercise last Saturday to mark the National Sanitation Day.

"We don't have to wait for the general clean-up exercise organised by the Assembly, but we must endeavour to keep our environment clean always to enhance sanitation in the municipality," Mr Kalamu said.

Clean-up exercise

The exercise was part of the government's efforts to maintain the highest standards of environmental sanitation in the municipality. Residents participated in various activities, including cleaning the frontage of residential, commercial and industrial premises, cleaning of frontages of premises to the middle of the road, cleansing and desilting of drains, and collection of waste by the roadside.

Citizens responsibility

"To keep up with His Excellency, the President, John Dramani Mahama's Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to maintain the highest standards of environmental sanitation in their jurisdictions, we have scheduled this exercise to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all residents," Mr Kalamu said.

The Ablekuma North MCE emphasised that it was the responsibility of all citizens to ensure a clean environment, citing the Criminal Offences Act, Act 29/60, Sec 296, ss (a) & (r), and the government's Policy of 24-Hour Sanitation.

"By the Criminal Offences Act and the government's Policy of 24-Hour Sanitation, it is the responsibility of all citizens to ensure a clean environment," he said.

Mr Kalamu said the assembly had made good environmental sanitation a top priority in the municipality and assured citizens that they would continue to work towards achieving this goal.
