Torgbui Kludzi legitimate Dufia of Gefia — National House of Chiefs
The National House of Chiefs in Kumasi has expunged the name of Torgbui Kordadzi III from the National Register of Chiefs as Dufia of Avenor Gefia in the Avenor Traditional Area of the Volta Region.
A letter addressed to the Volta Region House of Chiefs (VRHC) by the national house on May 7, and signed by the Registrar, Anthony Yeboah Tabiri, explained that at the time of the registration of Torgbui Kordadzi III, a few years ago, there was a substantive chief of the town by name Torgbui Kludzi III, whose details were entered into the National Register of Chiefs as far back as 2015.
The letter said “I write to inform you that at the Standing Committee Meeting of the House that took place on Thursday, March 27, 2025, members unanimously resolved to have the name of Torgbui Korbadzi III deleted from the National Register of Chiefs as Dufia of Avenor Gefia in the Avenor Traditional Area in the Volta Region on the basis that at the time of his registration, there was a substantive chief of the town by name Torgbui Kludzi III, whose details were entered into the National Register of Chiefs as far back as 2015, and is neither dead, abdicated nor destooled.”
In its response to the letter addressed to the Registrar of the National House of Chiefs, dated March 12, 2025, the VRHC said the decision to remove the name of Torgbui Kordadzi from the national register emerged from a careful review and confirmation from the records of the Volta Region House of Chiefs.
Therefore, the status of Torgbui Kludzi III as the legitimate Dufia of Gefia remains unchanged, the letter maintained.
The letter was made available to the Daily Graphic on Friday, May 16.
Volta chiefs
When contacted last Sunday, the President of the VRHC, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, corroborated the story.
He said the substantive Chief, Torgbui Kludzi III, was not dead, did not abdicate, and was not destooled.
“Therefore, a new chief cannot be enstooled to replace him,” Togbe Tepre Hodo, who is the Paramount Chief of Anfoega, told the Daily Graphic.
He said the necessary steps were being taken to rectify the issue and ensure the records reflected the rightful occupant of the stool, who invariably is Torgbui Kludzi III.
The President of VRHC warned that the house would not, for any reason, tolerate attempts by unscrupulous individuals to fan chieftaincy disputes in the region, which had become rampant in recent times.
“We need peace in the various traditional areas to make progress,” Togbe Tepre Hodo said.
