Transport Minister leads delegation to 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montréal-Canada

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, says Ghana has the appropriate competence backed by the commitment to ensure a safe, secure and sustainable global aviation system.

Speaking at the 42nd International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly ongoing in Montreal, Canada, Mr Nikpe said: “Ghana remains committed to working with ICAO and the global aviation community to ensure that safety, security, and sustainability are at the heart of our aviation development”.

“We believe that no nation should be left behind in shaping the future of air transport, and Ghana will continue to contribute actively to this shared vision,” he added.

Mr Nikpe is leading a high-level Ghanaian delegation at the September 23-October 3 2025, conference in North America.

He is accompanied by the acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), John M.K. Wumborti; the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Stephen Wilfred Arthur, and the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.

Ghana’s participation underscores its commitment to advancing aviation safety, security, sustainability, and innovation in line with ICAO’s principle of “no country left behind”.

The presence of the AIB Commissioner, the GCAA Director-General, and the GACL Managing Director reflects Ghana’s comprehensive engagement across safety oversight, accident investigation, regulatory leadership, and airport management.

ICAO assembly

The ICAO Assembly serves as the world’s premier platform for governments and aviation stakeholders to deliberate on the future of international civil aviation.

Opening the conference, Canada’s Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, stressed the importance of cooperation, innovation, accessibility  and sustainability in international aviation.

Mr MacKinnon further reaffirmed Canada’s dedication to upholding strong safety, security and inclusion in the sector.

On the sidelines of the ICAO Assembly, delegates attended the ICAO Innovation fair, a pre-event formality held between September 21 and 22, on the theme: “Global Horizons: Inclusive Innovations for Aviation”.

The fair provided a platform for showcasing transformative technologies and inclusive solutions in the aviation sector to strengthen global aviation.
