UG develops app to connect alumni globally

The University of Ghana has launched a digital platform to strengthen engagements with its alumni across the globe to deepen their contribution to the growth of the institution.

Known as the University of Ghana Global Alumni Network (UGA Network), the digital platform, was developed by the Institutional Advancement Directorate (InAD) in collaboration with the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) directorate of the university.

It seeks to enhance communication between the university and its global alumni community.

The platform is also expected to promote mentorship, networking, career development, philanthropy and institutional advancement.

Alumni app

At the launch of the app at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) at the University of Ghana, Legon, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the app would allow the alumni to create verified profiles, connect with fellow graduates, join alumni chapters, as well as register for university events and reunions.

She said it was to access university resources and participate in mentorship and networking initiatives as part of the university’s broader efforts to leverage technology, support institutional growth and strengthen higher education outcomes.

Prof. Amfo said the app reflected the university’s enduring commitment to its alumni worldwide and described the initiative as one of the institution’s most significant developments in recent years.

She explained that although the university had produced distinguished alumni who held leadership positions in government, business, academia and other sectors across the globe, engagement with many of them had remained fragmented over the years.

“The University of Ghana has one of the most distinguished alumni communities on the African continent, and I dare say globally,” she indicated and added that the platform would provide a reliable and structured means for the alumni to reconnect with classmates, year groups, alumni associations and chapters, while supporting mentorship and resource mobilisation efforts.

She further added that the app would also serve as a strategic resource for colleges, schools, institutes and departments within the university by enabling accurate alumni data management and targeted communication.

Register

The UG Vice-Chancellor, therefore, urged all alumni of the university to register on the platform and actively participate in strengthening the institution’s advancement agenda.

“Register on the UGA Network App, update your profile, reconnect with your classmates and your year group members, find the alumni chapter nearest to where you live and offer to mentor a student,” she said.

The Director of the Institutional Advancement Directorate, Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, said alumni engagement efforts at the university had, for many years, been fragmented and difficult to sustain due to the lack of a unified institutional system.

He explained that the new platform sought to provide a coordinated and sustainable framework for alumni engagement, fundraising, mentorship, networking and strategic communication.

Prof. Abekah-Nkrumah said that instead of procuring an external software solution, the university relied on its internal technical expertise to develop the platform.

“We engaged a talented team of software developers from the University’s ICT directorate, and they rose to the challenge with dedication, professionalism and uncommon sacrifice,”  he added.
