University of Ghana holds 3rd edition of Wear UG Day

The University of Ghana (UG) has held the third edition of “Wear UG Day celebration” to promote the professional and sense of responsible dressing among members of the university community.

The 2025 edition saw students, faculty and staff showcasing their university pride by dressing in attire made from the university's specially designed cloth and colours.

The celebration, which was climaxed at the Cedi Conference at UG last Wednesday, was attended by hundreds of university staff, faculty and students, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah-Amfo, and the Registrar of UG, Mrs Emelia Naa Kwantsua Agyei-Mensah, among others.

Celebration highlights

The event featured a fashion show competition, where staff and faculty showcased their creativity and innovation by designing unique outfits using the UG@75 commemorative cloth.

The fashion show was a highlight of the celebration, with all 14 participants displaying remarkable craftsmanship and style with the UG@75 commemorative cloth on the runway.

The fashion show was won by Baba Hamidu, a Principal Library Assistant at the Biochemistry Department Library, who fashioned his UG@75 commemorative cloth into a smock like a modern Dagbon King, a ruler who commands and controls colonies.

Mr Hamidu went home with a cash prize of GH₵ 2,000.00, a hamper from Twellium Company Limited, the sponsor of the programme and a certificate of participation as the winner of the fashion show.

Ms Diana Abena Addo-Mensah, a Principal Administrative Assistant at the Institute of African Studies, went home with a cash prize of GH₵ 1,500.00, a hamper from the sponsors and a certificate of participation as the first runner-up.

Ms Gifty Naa Shika Solomon, a Librarian at the College of Health Sciences’ Emmanuel Quaye Library, was the second runner-up for the fashion show.

She received a cash prize of GH₵ 1,000.00, a hamper from the sponsors and a certificate of participation.

All other contestants received hampers and certificates of participation in the 2025 Wear UG Day Fashion Show event.

Essence

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor said the celebration was not about clothing or dress codes only, but consciously cultivating and celebrating the identity of the university as members of the global institution.

“It is about reinforcing professionalism as a value that defines us, while also creating a space for self-expression that highlights our individual creativity and pride in being part of this community. When we wear UG, it goes beyond wearing identical fabrics,” she said.

Prof. Appiah-Amfo said wearing a UG apparel meant wearing the history, values and aspirations of the university.

She affirmed that, over the last few years, the impact of the initiative, which commenced in 2023 as its maiden edition, had been remarkable as it had generated excitement across campus and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor said the celebration had built a momentum and demonstrated the unifying power of shared tradition, describing it as a strong movement that would grow bigger in the near future.

She expressed belief that this year’s edition would not only deepen a sense of pride and belonging but also position the University of Ghana as a cultural trendsetter in the global higher education landscape.
