Water supply to eastern Tema, Accra shut down

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has shut down its Kpong Treatment plant with effect from yesterday.

“Consequently, there will be a temporary interruption in water supply until the work is completed,” the company said in a statement yesterday.

The shutdown is to allow for emergency repair works to fix damaged portions of the raw water intake pipeline of the plant.

GWL said the repair works, which had commenced, were expected to last for three days.

Affected areas

As a result, the interruption will affect customers in the entire Tema Metropolis and most parts of Accra, including, but not limited to Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, Parts of East Legon, and surrounding communities.

“Customers in these areas are kindly advised to store adequate quantities of water while supply is still available,” the statement said.

GWL assured all affected customers that water supply would be restored immediately upon completion of the repair work.

Ghana Water also entreat essential service providers, especially schools and hospitals, to reach out to GWL for assistance during the period.

In September 2023, when a similar shutdown occurred, about two million people in the eastern parts of Tema and Accra were affected.

The last time GWL shut down the Kpong Treatment Plant for emergency repair works was on Friday, July 4, this year.
