Ghana to reopen diplomatic mission in Mexico to strengthen trade and investment ties

The Government of Ghana has formally conveyed its intent to reopen its diplomatic mission in Mexico, with the aim of strengthening relations between the two countries through trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as agriculture, education, tourism, innovation, and capacity building.

The announcement was made during a consultative visit to Mexico by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, who formally communicated Ghana's decision to Mexican authorities.

Historic ties

Ghana and Mexico established diplomatic ties in 1961. Over the years, constructive engagement has been maintained through mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared commitment to international cooperation.

The message conveyed by Mr Quayson was welcomed by Mexican authorities, who assured of their readiness to provide the necessary support to facilitate the reopening of the mission.

Strategic discussions

In a meeting with the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, Ambassador Maria Teresa Mercado, discussions focused on increasing efforts in economic and technical cooperation.

Ghana informed the Mexican side of its interest in broadening cooperation in areas such as trade facilitation, technical exchange, cultural diplomacy, and education.

Benefits of reopening

The reopening of the mission will enhance the delivery of consular services to Ghanaian nationals in the jurisdiction and promote people-to-people exchanges.

The Deputy Minister also interacted with members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of the business community, and other stakeholders, during which he highlighted the reasons why Ghana is a preferred investment destination.

No timeline was provided for the actual reopening of the mission or the appointment of an ambassador to Mexico.
