GIS Board tours borders in Volta Region
The Director of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr Peter A. Wiredu, has advised personnel of the service to be extra vigilant at their various border posts, in view of the increasing trans-border crimes and threats of tourism in the West African sub-region.

He urged the personnel to intensify intelligence gathering and collaborate with other security agencies in the sub-region to protect Ghana’s frontiers.
Dr Wiredu gave the advice at a staff durbar during a three-day working visit to the Volta Region to familiarise himself with the operations and the challenges facing GIS personnel in the region.
The tour took him and a delegation from the Board of Directors of the GIS to Nkwanta, Menusu, Shia, Nyive, Akanu, Neope, Aflao and Ho.
Dr Wiredu said the increase in transnational crime and terrorism could undermine Ghana’s security and the professional integrity of GIS officials.
The Board Chairman of the GIS, Mr Cletus Avoka, affirmed the board’s commitment and dedication to the work entrusted to it to assist the management of the service.
Corruption
He said the board appreciated the efforts of the personnel stationed at the various exit and entry points and entreated them to eschew corruption, be disciplined and punctual, exhibit professionalism, be abreast of the rudiments of the job and know their terrain.
He suggested to the management of the GIS to introduce tourism into the curriculum at the GIS Training School, since officers of the GIS were the first agency of state to meet foreigners on arrival and the last when they depart.

Mr Avoka commended the Volta Regional Commander of the service and the personnel in the region for a good work done, in spite of the challenges, and assured them of the board’s support at all times.
