The initiative is to encourage all communities in the district to undertake their own projects while the assembly provides them with the technical and material assistance.

It has the objective to enable communities in the area to identify projects they needed the most and then mobilise resources to start such projects so as to attract support from the district assembly.

The assembly has subsequently distributed 1,000 bags of cement to 16 communities that are currently undertaking various projects. Projects being undertaken by the beneficiary communities include a police station, teachers’ quarters, community centres, drains, culverts and places of convenience.

The communities include Abaasa, Benso, Mampong, Oguaakrom, Aboso, Ojobi, Odumasi, Potsin, Lome, Jukwa, Adawukwaa and Pomadze.

As part of the initiative, the assembly would be regularly supplying them with building materials until the respective projects are completed.

Launch of initiative

At a ceremony to officially launch the initiative, the Gomoa West District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Jonamoah Moses Jehu-Appiah, said the move was to help revive the spirit of community self-help in undertaking projects.

He said it was about time people became interested in the development of their communities by undertaking self-help projects to complement the efforts of the government.

According to him, the assembly cannot overly rely on the District Assembly Common Fund to finance all projects in the district since the area was very huge.

‘’It is important that you take the first step by starting the project so that government would provide the needed assistance towards its completion,’’ he stressed.

He commended the communities for their voluntarism as it was a major step towards the transformation of the district.

The DCE stated that the assembly would regularly monitor the projects to ensure that they were executed professionally

Coordinating Director

The District Coordinating Director, Mr Emmanuel Baisie, indicated that the programme was the brainchild of the DCE and it was to enable the assembly to spread development across the entire district.

He noted that the assembly had resolved to push forward this agenda since the government could not award every project on contract with funds sourced from the DACF.

He called on the communities to embrace the initiative and support the government in its quest to improve the living conditions of the people in the district.
