While expressing the government’s resolve to deal with the fiscal challenges in the country, the Vice-President said a number of issues had been discussed with the banks on how to restore economic stability.

Mr Amissah-Arthur was speaking with a three-member delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) which called on him at the Flagstaff House yesterday.

The delegation was led by Professor Mthuli Ncube, the Chief Economist and Vice-President of the AfDB, accompanied by the Resident Representative of the AfDB in Ghana, Madam Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, and the Regional Director in charge of West Africa, Mr Janvier Litse.

Government working

The Vice-President told the  delegation that the government was doing everything within its power to put the economy back on track by 2015/16 as it promised.

He observed that the level of economic deficit was the result of losses in revenue in the export of cocoa and gold and described the visit by the AfDB team as timely, given the fact that the bank could support the government in proffering solutions to the economic difficulties.

“We are grateful for this visit, particularly for the reason that it comes at a time when our country is facing significant economic challenges,” Mr Amissah-Arthur said.

They later held a closed-door meeting.

Delegation satisfied

After the closed-door meeting, Professor Ncube, told journalists that they were satisfied with how well the bank’s investment projects in the country were doing.

He stated that the team’s visit to the country was to see how well the bank’s funded projects were doing, among other things.

Prof. Ncube expressed the bank’s resolve to embark on more development projects in the country, including infrastructural development and education, stressing that “to do so will require a sound microeconomic environment to invest”.

AfDB Projects in Ghana

The AfDB has supported the Government of Ghana to embark on numerous development projects.

Notable among them are the Pokuase-ACP Junction road project, the Rural Enterprises Project III, the Ghana Institutional Support Programme and the reconstruction of the Fulfuso-Sawla road in the Northern Region.
