‘Place premium on upbringing of children’

Parents have been advised to place premium on the upbringing of their children since they form the nucleus of every country’s development.

A traditional birth attendant (TBA), Madam Dinah Dansoa, who gave the advice, said she had been in the business of delivering expectant women of the their babies for close to 40 years and had helped in saving the lives of many women in labour.

Popularly called Aunt Ama, she told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that her work as a midwife had exposed her to the numerous challenges some women went through in nurturing their pregnancy to the delivery point and largely attributed it to the lack of support from their husbands.

Aunt Ama, 65, said women were critical to national development and must be helped in every area to enable them to contribute their quota to nation building.

She expressed regret at situations where some pregnant women were left to cater for their pregnancy and babies alone and urged fathers to be up and doing.

She said some women in labour sometimes came to her facility without being adequately prepared.

Aunt Ama’s home at East Tanokrom in Takoradi in the Western Region is now a community weighing centre.

She recounted how in the Rawlings era, their services as TBAs were recognised and valued. She added, “I and my group benefited from four different kinds of training which helped us in saving the lives of women and babies.”

The acting Western Regional Commander of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Adiku, called on fathers to be more responsible and build a relationship with their children.

The Western Regional Director of the Department of Children, Mrs Faustina Awotwe, said women and the girl-child must be well-supported. — GNA
