The event is in conformity with the decision that was taken by the TUC to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the utility hikes.

According to the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the TUC, Ms Dorcas Amanquandoh, the demonstration was to support the decision of the mother union.

On Wednesday, September 25, this year, the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced 78.9 per cent increase in electricity and 50.2 per cent increase in water.

Following the increase, organised labour, led by the TUC gave the government and the PURC a 10-day ultimatum to reduce the tariffs or face the wrath of workers.

The organised labour also advised all workers in the region to plan and execute demonstrations ahead of the strike.

It is in this light that the Greater Accra branch of the TUC has decided to go embark on the demonstration.

Ms Amanquandoh said the demonstration would immediately be followed by strike on November,18 2013.

She told the Daily Graphic that it was not immediately known as to when they would end the strike saying, “We will be waiting on the directives from the mother body.”

Background to demonstration

Organised labour decided to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, November 18, 2013 to back its demand for a reduction in the recent tariff increases.

This followed a meeting to deliberate on recent developments relating to increases in utility tariffs.

The group called on workers in the formal and the informal sectors to stay at home on November 18 to express their dissatisfaction with the failure of the government to reduce the tariffs.
