Greater Accra win Airtel competition
Boys and girls teams representing Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions converged on the Volta capital of Ho to compete for honours to represent their zones at the national finals of the Airtel Rising Star Competition scheduled for Sunyani next month.
Greater Accra proved too strong for the Volta Region whom they beat in both the Boys and Girls’ competitions in the final. Eastern Region finished bottom of the pile in both categories.
Coach Nana Akwasi Afranie, who led Ghana to win its first World U- 17 trophy in 1991 and guided the Black Satellites to emerge runners-up at the World Youth Championship in 2001, observed that Ghana’s best hope for her football future lay with Airtel Rising Stars.
“Ghana has lots of talents. Look at the players we have found here. The standard of the competition has been healthy and remember this is only the second screening exercise.
“After here, we will meet all the zonal champions in Sunyani where we will select the national team,” he stated.
Mrs Helen Ntosu, Volta Regional Minister, said Airtel’s initiative to touch lives and change the destinies of Ghana’s future football talents was commendable.
