Drama unfolded at the forecourt of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) yesterday when two leaders of a demonstrating group collapsed one after the other in the process of delivering their petition to the coordinating council.

Mr Mawuli Dzietror, one of the leaders, suddenly had a blackout while he was reading the petition.

Quickly, some of the demonstrators took him aside to pray for him. While efforts were being made to resuscitate him, the leader of the group, Mr Vincent Hodoli, aka Torgodomakpa, also collapsed and was rushed to the Ho Municipal Hospital.

The group was protesting against the state of the roads in Ho, as well as other major roads in the Volta Region.

The collapse of the two leaders, however, did not deter the demonstrators from presenting their petition, which was eventually read by Mr Abdul Geyiru Gbemumu, one of the demonstrators.

Petition

The petition expressed the displeasure of concerned citizens of Ho with the state of the roads in the town, as well as other major roads, including the Adaklu portion of the Ho–Sogakope road; some portions of the Eastern Corridor roads, and the Ho-Denu road.

The petition called on all Members of Parliament (MPs) and other government appointees to break their silence on the neglect of the Volta Region.

Protest march

Earlier,  the demonstrators had marched through some of the streets of Ho, carrying placards.

Some of the placards read: “Are Voltarians only voters? Then change our name to voter region”; “President Mahama, please don’t take 2016 for granted else your world bank will turn into microfinance company”; “Mr Deputy Minister, don’t just be a funeral ambassador else you start preparing your hand-over notes now, Goodbye Prosper”; “Madam Regional Minister, we want to see what you did for the Eastern Region replicated in Volta Region.”

The petition, however, acknowledged the efforts of the government in the construction of the Volta Regional Hospital, University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Ho Market.

The Volta Regional Coordinating Director, Mr Ibrahim Alhassan, who received the petition on behalf of the Volta Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, commended the demonstrators for conducting their protest in a peaceful manner and assured them that their grievances would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for redress.
