Group wants government to provide power to communities

A group calling itself Concerned Youth of Sekyere Afram Plains in the Sekyere Afram Plains District says it is looking up to the government to connect at least five communities in the district to the national grid by October 1, this year.

This follows an assurance given by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Alex Adomako-Mensah, in 2015, that the government had awarded electrification project for at least five communities.

The communities which were to benefit from the electrification project are Anyonofi, Dagomba, Dawiah, Funsua and Nyameama.

In separate interviews with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the group, Mr Boakye Yiadom, and the Secretary, Mr Wisdom Buer, said out of the 90 communities in the district, only the district capital, Drobonso, had been hooked to the national grid.

They said in 2015, the MP assured them that electrification project for the five communities had been awarded on contract and that the contractor would complete works soon.

They, however, said the project had not taken off since the announcement was made.

Reaction

However, when the Daily Graphic contacted the MP, he acknowledged that he had given his constituents the assurance for the completion of work on the electrification project.

He said the contract was awarded by the Ministry of Energy via a prefinancing system.

This means that the contractor, New Life, would have to use its own funds for the project after which the government would pay back the money.

This, according to the MP, was a consensus reached between the ministry, which stood in for the government, and the contractor, so he could not understand why the project had not taken off yet.

He told the aggrieved group to remain calm and resolute since, as the MP, he was doing his best to make sure the project took off.
