Hoax job announcement attracts unemployed nurses

The high expectation of scores of unemployed trained nurses to be selected for various nursing jobs at the Ministry of Defence fizzled out when the announcement turned out to be a hoax last Monday.

The desperate job seekers rushed to the Burma Camp, where the recruitment was to be held, only to be informed that the text message that announced the recruitment was false.

The people, numbering about 200, had responded to a social media text message that was circulated widely on WhatsApp and facebook announcing that the ministry would recruit nurses for various job opportunities.

Disappointment

“The text message had indicated that the ministry was in the process of offering job opportunities to nursing trainees at the Burma Camp in Accra,” one of the people stated.

The nurses felt extremely disappointed when they went to the Ministry of Defence where the Deputy Director of Public Relations informed them that the ministry had not announced or initiated any recruitment process.

“The Ministry of Defence has not yet initiated any process to recruit people for nursing jobs at the ministry,” Lt Commander Andy La-Anyane informed them.

He told them that anytime the ministry was ready to recruit nurses, it would advertise such job opportunities in the media.

Lt Commander La-Anyane advised the public to always cross-check any recruitment announcement from the media before they respond.

Desperate for jobs

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after learning that the text message was a hoax, some of the nurses stated that they had completed their training at the various nursing training colleges across the country but had remained at home for the past five years.

“Some of us have also graduated for about five years but we are still jobless and still at home,” one of them stated.

Jude Kusi Mandela, another of the dejected job seekers, stated, “I have remained unemployed for the past five years but in order to support myself and my family, I have become a taxi driver so that I can earn some income.”

The nurses, who indicated that many of them across the regions had passed their midwifery council exams and  also completed both private and public training colleges,  were desperate for jobs to take care of themselves.
