House of Chiefs appeals to striking unions

The National House of Chiefs has appealed to the striking labour unions to reconsider their decision and resume work on compassionate grounds, while the government finds lasting solutions to the issues at stake.

A statement signed by Naa Professor John S. Nabila, the President of the National House of Chiefs, said the situation was threatening the stability, peace and development of the country.

It said the chiefs were pleading most especially with doctors, pharmacists and university lecturers to consider their decision in the interest of their patients and students who were at the receiving end of their services.

The statement said doctors, with their genuine grievances, should tamper justice with mercy, since lives lost during the period could not be brought back after the strike.

It said it was important for the striking labour unions to collectively build industrial peace and harmony for a vibrant and prosperous nation.

It called on the government, the National Labour Commission, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the aggrieved parties to soften their entrenched positions, co-operate with the government and go back to the negotiation table to resolve the issues amicably. — GNA
