How to calculate BECE aggregates for 2025 SHS placement

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has explained how aggregates for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are calculated for placement into senior high schools and technical institutions under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

The service has also urged candidates, parents, and schools to confirm school choices on the CSSPS portal before the deadline of September 8, 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the GES, Mr Daniel Fenyi, said the CSSPS portal was live and active, and called on all stakeholders to verify and confirm details to avoid challenges during placement.

“The CSSPS portal is live and active. Candidates are encouraged to log in via the official link https://www.cssps.gov.gh/hub/login
to confirm their school choices,” Mr Fenyi said.

He explained that a candidate’s aggregate was determined by adding grades obtained in the four core subjects, namely English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, and then adding the best two grades from the remaining subjects.

This, he said, had remained the standard formula used by the CSSPS placement team.

Mr Fenyi added that although raw scores were still the main basis for placement, the aggregate also played an important role in determining which schools candidates were placed in.

He said the CSSPS team was available around the clock to provide support and assist candidates and parents throughout the process.

Candidates who noticed errors in their school selection or personal details were advised to use the “Message” option on the portal to report the issues. Mr Fenyi said feedback from users would also help improve the process.

The GES noted that the CSSPS portal would remain open until September 8, 2025, after which final placements would be processed based on the confirmed data.

Example of a candidate’s BECE results

English Language – Grade 2

Mathematics – Grade 3

Integrated Science – Grade 2

Social Studies – Grade 3

ICT – Grade 2

Religious and Moral Education (RME) – Grade 1

BDT – Grade 4

Step 1: Take the four core subjects

English (2) + Mathematics (3) + Science (2) + Social Studies (3) = 10

Step 2: Add the best two other subjects

Best two are RME (1) and ICT (2).
1 + 2 = 3

Step 3: Calculate the total aggregate

Core (10) + Best two (3) = Aggregate 13
