Ghana reopens Embassy in Iran after three-month closure

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has announced the reopening of Ghana’s Embassy in Iran, which was temporarily closed in June this year.

According to a press release issued yesterday (Tuesday, September 2, 2025), the decision follows an improvement in the security situation in Tehran, where the Embassy is located.

Work at the Embassy is expected to resume on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that with the improvement in the security situation in Iran, a decision has been taken for the Embassy to resume its operations on Tuesday, 16th September, 2025,” the statement said.

Background

The MFA announced the closure of Ghana’s Mission in Tehran on Monday, June 16, 2025, due to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

The heightened conflict saw both countries exchange missile strikes, destroying property and causing civilian casualties. The temporary closure was a precautionary measure to safeguard Ghanaian citizens and MFA staff in Iran.

“The temporary closure of the Embassy of Ghana in Tehran, Iran was to guarantee the safety of the staff of the Mission during heightened tension between Iran and Israel,” the MFA noted.

Monitoring

The Ministry assured Ghanaians that despite reopening the Embassy, it would continue to closely monitor developments in the Middle East and take swift action should the need arise.

“Notwithstanding this decision, the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the safety of the staff working in the Embassy and the Ghanaian community in Iran is not compromised,” it added.

It further assured the public of its commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians in Iran, pledging to provide regular updates whenever necessary.
