The community service seeks to enable the students to familiarise with their communities and broaden their perceptions of the world.

Hulede Foundation is a non-profit organisation with the primary objective of helping brilliant but needy students at the KNUST to pursue their education.

Under the scheme, every scholarship awardee is required to volunteer 40 hours minimum of community service.

Experience

Sharing his experience on the community service, Derrick Oppong Asare, a final year undergraduate student in agriculture, said he did his community service at his former school, Methodist JHS at Tanoso, near Techiman in the Bono East Region, where he taught Mathematics and Integrated Science.

Apart from teaching, he also organised a seminar for the entire school children on the importance of taking their studies serious and the scholarship opportunities available at the tertiary level.

Physically challenged

He further indicated that he solicited the support of the Hulede Foundation to provide a wheelchair for a physically challenged MoMo vendor and petty trader, Rebecca Nyaame.

“I took pictures and videos of her and shared it with the Hulede Foundation KNUST scholarship recipients group. Her story touched John Hulede, the founder of the foundation who provided her with a brand new wheelchair after only four days.

He added that, Mr Hulede together with some Akatakyie (old students of Opoku Ware SHS) provided the physically challenged woman with an undisclosed  amount of money to help her business.

“Mr John Hulede solely stocked up Rebecca’s container with new clothes from USA,” Asare added.
