I will prioritise the mental health of military personnel and veterans - Omane Boamah
Mental health care for Ghanaian military personnel is set to improve under proposed reforms by Defense Minister-designate Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah.
Speaking during his vetting on January 28, 2025, Dr Omane Boamah emphasised the need to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges faced by service members.
Drawing from his medical background and personal family experiences with military veterans, he pledged to work with the Ministries of Health and Education to train mental health specialists for the armed forces.
“I have two veterans in my home, from my dad's side. I remember growing up when the stories were being told, one of them even shed tears recounting how a colleague was killed during operations," he shared.
Dr Omane Boamah stressed the importance of creating a support system to help service members cope with the psychological demands of their work.
He also promised collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Education to increase mental health support for service members, including training more specialists for the military.
