"For several decades now, the Police Service, like many public institutions, has had challenges in the area of providing adequate office and residential accommodation. Over the years, various governments and the police administration seem not to have tackled the problem holistically,” he said.

Speaking at the inauguration of a police station for residents of Roman Ridge and its environs in Accra yesterday, Mr Alhassan said population growth and urbanisation could lead to an upsurge in criminal activities hence the need to provide more police stations and residential accommodation for police personnel.

He, therefore, urged benevolent individuals, corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations to support the police in their communities with the provision of police stations and posts to enable them to protect lives and property in all communities.

He challenged divisional and district commands to undertake regular fatigue, cleaning and inspections to ensure that buildings were properly maintained.

The office accomodation for the station was provided by the Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI), a non-governmental organisation.

The Roman Ridge Police Station is under the Kotobabi Police District Command and will serve residents of Roman Ridge and some parts of Mamobi, the Airport Residential Area and Achimota.

Morale

In his remarks, the Accra Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the provision of the station would enhance the work of the police, as well as boost the morale of the personnel  at post.

He reiterated that the police needed the support of all to achieve its objective of creating a peaceful and congenial atmosphere for the public in every part of the country.

The President of WEFI, Mrs Vida Hanson, said the GH¢50,000 fully furnished Roman Ridge Police Station was provided as one of the initiatives to mark the foundation’s fifth anniversary.

She said until the construction of the police station, the personnel had to serve the community from a make-shift tent.

“Our founder, who lives at Roman Ridge, saw the police personnel under the tent and thought that was not good, particularly when it rained, and so she convinced the foundation to provide a police station to serve the residents of this area,” she said.
