Immigration Service ready for Visas on Arrival Programme

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is ready to undertake the Visas on Arrival Programme that was announced by President John Mahama, earlier this year.

This means that all African Union (AU) nationals whose countries do not have a visa-free agreement with Ghana would be able to obtain visas on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to a statement issued by the GIS, the programme would be piloted at the KIA for three months before it would be carried out at other entry points.

In his State of the Nation Address in February, this year, President Mahama said all AU nationals would from July, this year, be issued with visas on arrival.

That, he said, followed a decision taken at the Executive Council Meeting of the AU.

 Modalities

To effectively carry it out, the GIS has laid out some modalities.

The statement explained that all AU nationals affected by the policy who arrive in the country must have a passport, valid for at least three months, from the date of entry.

They must have a return ticket or evidence of onward travel.

They must show evidence of sufficient funds and proof of accommodation before they are granted visas.

All visas will be issued for a validity period of 30 days.

Additionally, they will be subject to the provisions of Section 4 of the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573) which apply to all travellers entering Ghana.
