The Chief of Akyem Awisa, near Oda in the Eastern Region, Nana Kwarteng Karikari III, has called on communities to support the national development programme by initiating self-help projects in their areas.

That, he said, was imperative as the government’s limited resources could not cater for the needs of all communities.

Nana Karikari made the call at a durbar organised by the Accra-Tema branch of the Awisa-Apaaso Citizens Association at Sakumono to plan development programmes for the two communities.

The durbar also marked the inauguration of the Abeka branch of the association.

In attendance were Nana Yaw Osafo-Maafo, a Minister of Finance in the Kufuor administration;  Mr Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Swedru;  and Mr Emmanuel Kwakye, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim South among others.

Nana Karikari commended members of the association for their foresight and pledged the support of the chiefs and elders of the two communities for their plans.

He said Awisa was noted for the value it placed on education, as well as its commitment to the development of education, which had resulted in the production of many intellectuals for the country.

Expensive funerals

The chief announced that expensive funerals had been banned at Awisa, so that people would use their resources to fund the education of their children.

Nana Osafo-Maafo urged all Awisa citizens within Accra and Tema to join the association to contribute towards the development of the two communities.

He was full of praise for the people of Awisa for not engaging in litigation, a situation that had enabled the town to make progress.

The treasurer of the association, Mrs Paulina Adjei-Maafo, highlighted the various development projects it had undertaken at home to improve the quality of life of the people.

Mr Osei Nyarko donated a generator valued at GH¢8,000 to Awisa and also pledged 100 bags of cement to the community for its development projects, while Mr Kwakye also pledged 50 bags of cement.

More than GH¢21,000 in cash and pledges was realised at the function.
