He asserted that some private sector health facilities were offering efficient and effective healthcare delivery due to proper supervision and the show of a sense of ownership, but said that was lacking in the public hospitals.

According to Dr Oku, until supervision and monitoring were intensified, the issue of quality healthcare delivery in all public health institutions will continue to be a problem, stressing that health personnel in those facilities need to give of their best.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Nurses and Midwives Association in Kumasi, he explained that, “I am not saying that all health workers in the government facilities in the country are lazy, but most of them show apathy due to lack of proper supervision, motivation and lack of incentives.”

He suggested to the government to support the private sector in the areas of manpower training and infrastructure to enable it to play its complementary role effectively, in support of national development.

The group, formed in 2003 and inaugurated in 2004, currently has a membership of 384.

In an address to mark the occasion, a retired Deputy Director of Health Services at the Komfo Anokye Hospital, Mrs Susanna Efaa Twum,  who spearheaded the formation of the group, commended the members of the group for their dedication.
