Jinapor: We’re not selling ECG; just fixing it with private sector help

Cabinet has approved a new policy to allow private sector participation in the billing and revenue collection processes of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr John Jinapor, has announced.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Mr Jinapor clarified that the initiative does not constitute a sale of ECG, but is rather a strategic move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.

“Let me put on record, we are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is to involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection sector,” he said.

Mr Jinapor encouraged Ghanaian businesses to take advantage of the opportunity, explaining that the policy seeks to introduce innovation and competition into the utility space while reducing revenue losses.

According to the Minister, the decision forms part of broader efforts to strengthen ECG’s financial operations, particularly as the company transitions to a new billing platform and operates under tighter financial control mechanisms.
