KMA to rebuild Krofuom market

Traders at the Krofuom market in Kumasi will soon heave a sigh of relief if plans initiated by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to continue a stalled market project meant for them are carried out.

The project, which has dragged for eight years, is to be continued alongside ongoing construction works on the Kejetia market.

The Krofuom market is a Government-of-Ghana-sponsored project which was brought to a standstill  for lack of funds.

According to the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Mr Kojo Bonsu, for the urgent demand for the facility, a portion of it would have to be quickly constructed for habitation while other sections of it were still being worked on.

To this end, the KMA is rallying support to raise at least GH¢18 million from local sources to have the entire market project completed in six months.

So far, two out of eight contractors chosen to work on the project have moved to the site, while the other six are awaiting clearance of their work certificates and initial financial outlay to begin work.

Besides the Krofuom market  project, there is the Kejetia market, whose construction is estimated at $298 million. Traders at the Kejetia Market have been moved to different locations, including the Adehyieman Gardens, Royal Market and the Kumasi Race Course area to make way for construction works.

Mr Kojo Bonsu, who inspected the ongoing works at Kejetia, said an early completion of works on the Krofuom Market would be a welcome relief as it would take a number of traders from the Kejetia Market who have been made redundant as a result of limited space in the temporary markets provided.

When completed, the Krofuom Market can accommodate about 2,300 traders, leaving excess room beyond the current number of 1,700 who trade at the venue.

A consultant to the project, Mr Tony Yeboah Asare, said the new Krofuom Market would have 2,300 stalls and 2,800 shops, and other supporting facilities such as a police post and a fire station.
