Briefing newsmen, the Municipal Works Director of LaDMA, Mr Valentine Amedo, said even though investigations were still ongoing to establish the cause of the accident, it was believed that structural defects caused the collapse of one half of the building.

He denied speculations that the contractor had no permit to put up the two-storey building. He said early in September this year, a team from the assembly visited the building site and found that the contractor did not have a permit. He was, therefore, advised to submit documents on the building and get a permit, which he did.

According to him, the Planning Committee at LaDMA granted the contractor permit on December 2, 2014.

The contractor, Alhaji Nuhu Zakaria, said an eyewitness who was also working on the site at the time said he saw the worker who died fall through a hole on the top floor as concrete mixture was being discharged. He said it was believed that the worker might have made the props shift, resulting in the collapse.

Alhaji Zakaria said family members of the deceased had been contacted and the injured who were admitted to hospital had been discharged, with the exception of one.

He stated further that every support service stipulated by construction regulations in the building industry would be extended to the victims.

The Municipal Coordinating Director of LaDMA, Alhaji Haruna Salam, said the assembly would continue with its investigation and promised to get back to the public with its findings.
