Lands Commission introduces innovations to improve service

The Lands Commission is implementing a number of initiatives to enhance land service delivery. For a start, the commission is setting up a Customer Service and Access Unit in Accra, with other offices in four cities —  Sekondi in the Western Region, Koforidua in the Eastern Region, Tamale in the Northern Region and Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

The commission will also establish a Land Information System which will facilitate its migration from the current delivery of manual services to digital services.

Digital migration

The Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, Dr Wilfred K. Anim-Odame, announced this when the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, paid a working visit to the commission yesterday.

Dr Anim-Odame explained that the customer service unit was to make the processing of land documentation a one-shop exercise.

He added that the digital migration was also intended to make services easier and faster to enable clients to get their land titles within three months.

The management of the commission, he said, had also developed a communications tool in the form of a newsletter to be issued on a quarterly basis to provide information for the staff and the public.

He indicated that the projects were being undertaken under Phase 2 of the Land Administration Project (LAP).

Challenges

On the challenges facing the commission, Dr Anim-Odame stated that it was constrained by limited and unsustainable resources.

He, therefore, appealed to the minister, who had worked with the Lands Commission in the past, to help the commission to get the needed resources to enable it to fulfil its mandate.

Nii Osah Mills commended the commission on the various initiatives, particularly so as people had had to go through a lot of frustration in the past to obtain land title.
