The donation, which follows a request from the La District Police Command, included solar panels and batteries.

Before handing over the solar system, the La Area Welfare Manager of the church, Mr John Buah, said the gesture was one of 26 such community projects executed by the church since January 2015.

He said it was estimated that about 555,000 people would benefit from such community projects sponsored through the Latter-day Saints Charities established in 1985.

The Latter-day Saints Charities, he said, oversaw the church’s humanitarian efforts to relieve people of suffering and offer hope with the potential for a better life to millions of people around the world. Funds for the projects were raised by members of the church.

Members in Ghana

The West African Area President of the church, Mr LeGrand Curtis, in a remark, said the church had about 6,600 members in Ghana.

He said it had over the years partnered the government and  non-governmental organisations to meet the needs of communities.

Mr Curtis commended the police for their commitment to serve society and ensure peace and order at all times.

Working in darkness

Receiving the donation, the Kpeshie Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Victor Gyan-Kyereko, said oftentimes the police station was engulfed in darkness whenever there was power outage.

"It is a challenge when the police have to work in darkness,” he said, and added that with the solar system it would help enhance security in the community.

The Cantonments Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Iddi Seidu, thanked the church for its support and impressed on other establishments to assist police stations in their area.

He said criminals took advantage of darkness to engage in criminal activities but with the solar lighting system, he said, the police would have reliable power supply to work throughout the night to the benefit of the community.

“The La Police Station can now have 24-hour supply of power and it will help them work better and improve security in the area.”
