KNUST signs agreement with Strasbourg varsity

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has signed a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Strasbourg in France. The agreement would facilitate the acquisition of doctorate degrees in French by staff of the French Unit of the Modern Language Department of the KNUST.

The elevation of the qualification of staff and enhancement of the capacity of students in the French language is one of the ways of graduating the French Unit into a department as well as position the Modern Languages Department into a full-fledged faculty.

The Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. William Otoo-Ellis and Prof. Francis Kern of the University of Strasbourg signed for their respective institutions.

Prof. Kern, who is the Vice-President of International Relations for the University of Strasbourg, said the agreement between the two universities was part of a bigger programme involving four other Ghanaian universities.

Already, officials of the universities of Cape Coast and Education at Winneba have appended their signatures to documents, while officials of the University of Ghana are expected to sign the documents soon.

The programme, which was arranged by the French Embassy in Ghana, was expected to tackle other areas of learning, including engineering, as expressed by the Vice Chancellor of KNUST.

“The plan, which aims at enhancing the course of study, has become necessary in order to meet current trends in academic requirements,” Prof. Otoo-Ellis said.

The duration of study for a doctorate degree in French will be three years. Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the KNUST maintains that the institution has personnel ready to undertake the assignment.

The university believes the study of French has become necessary because all of Ghana’s neighbours are French-speaking countries.
