The Municipal Chief Executive for the Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA), Mr Benjamin Baroson Angenu, made this call in Accra at the assembly’s first quarter public forum.

He  expressed disappointment in the poor participation of residents in the municipality during the NSD clean-ups.

“Even though residents came out during the National Sanitation Day, to me it is not the best,” he said.

He stated that it was the responsibility of the traditional and religious leaders to encourage residents, especially the youth, to participate in the NSD, adding that it would increase residents’ participation during the NSD.

“The traditional and religious leaders also have a role to play in maintaining sanitation in our municipality,” he said.

Public forum

The public forum was aimed at deepening the knowledge residents have of governance at the local level and encourage them to participate in it.

The forum formed part of the Social Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability Programme (SPEFA) that recommends the participation of citizens in the development of their communities and in the appraisals of the finances of district assemblies.

The forum, which was also to keep residents up to date on the way the assembly spent its finances, encouraged them to fulfil their obligations, including the payment of property rates and tolls.

Challenges

Mr Angenu said despite the many development successes that the AdMA had chalked up, acquiring land for the various projects was a challenge the assembly faced.

He has, therefore, urged chiefs and families to whom lands in the municipality belonged to release some of their lands for development projects.

Donation

The Member of Parliament for Adentan constituency, Mr Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore, donated an ambulance to the assembly for use in times of emergency.

Projects

The Municipal Planning Officer, Mrs Lillian Baeka, in her project performance report, stated that while some projects which the assembly embarked on in 2014 had been completed and were in use, there were others which could not be completed.

This, she said, was the result of the assembly’s inability to meet its targetted budget to complete all projects.

Some of those projects are the rehabilitation of the Adjiriganor Health Centre, the construction of a two-storey, 12-unit classrooms at Sraha; the upgrading of Islamic University area roads and the extension of electricity to some selected schools in the municipality.

She also disclosed that those projects which were not completed were rolled over to 2015 to ensure that the municipality achieved its development target.

Some of those projects are provision of water and sanitation facilities, upgrading of the Adentan Lorry Station and construction of shops at Ogbojo market.
