Power cuts hit Accra from April 8–17 as ECG rolls out transformer upgrades
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced scheduled power outages across several parts of Accra in April as it embarks on a phased transformer replacement and upgrade exercise aimed at improving electricity supply.
The exercise, approved by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, will be carried out in two main phases between April 8 and April 17, 2026, affecting multiple communities within the capital.
The first phase, scheduled from April 8 to April 10, will focus on the Nmai-Dzor substation and is expected to impact areas including East Legon Hills, Nanakrom, School Junction, Lakeside communities, Katamanso, Borteyman, New Legon and surrounding neighbourhoods. Residents in these locations will experience outages in rotating time blocks, with each group expected to be without power for up to six hours at a time.
ECG in a statement indicated that the outages will be implemented in phases throughout each day, beginning from early morning through to midnight, to allow engineers to safely install upgraded transformers and complete associated technical works.
A second phase of the exercise will take place from April 15 to April 17 at the Lashibi primary substation. Communities expected to be affected during this period include Sakumono, Spintex, Community 18, Regimanuel Estates, Devtraco Estates, HFC Estates, Baatsonaa, Marina Mall area and parts of Tema’s adjoining settlements.
Other locations likely to experience interruptions include Celebrity Golf Club, Awudu Issaka Park, Shalom Spot and areas around the Spintex Junction, with outages similarly scheduled in staggered intervals over the three-day period.
The ECG said the planned interruptions are necessary to ensure the safe execution of the upgrade works, which will involve increasing transformer capacity from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA to meet growing demand in these rapidly developing communities.
While acknowledging the inconvenience to households and businesses, the power distributor assured customers that efforts would be made to minimise disruption and complete the works within the announced timelines.
The company has urged residents in affected areas to take note of the schedules and make adequate arrangements ahead of the outages, as it works to enhance the reliability and stability of electricity supply across Accra.
