President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Ministry of Education to involve local companies in the printing and publishing of textbooks and exercise books.

The President made this known in Parliament on Thursday as he delivered the State of the Nation address.

He also announced the distribution of six million textbooks and fifteen million exercise books to schoolchildren in deprived communities in the country.

Many local Ghanaian printing companies including the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) under its subsidiary, Graphic Packaging (G-Pak) have been clamoring to get printing jobs from the Ministry of Education.

The directive from the President therefore comes as a big relief.

President Mahama said the package was part of social intervention programmes aimed at sustaining access to education and reducing the cost of education to parents.

He said it was also aimed at creating opportunities for all children of school age to have access to quality education.

Other items that will be distributed to schoolchildren include 10,000 pairs of locally made school sandals, 500,000 school uniforms and 30,000 computers.
