Mahama urges Electoral Commission to resolve disputed constituencies with fairness

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to address disputes in nine constituencies fairly and consistently, emphasizing the commission's need to uphold principles in its decision-making.

In a video message shared on social media on Friday, December 20, 2024, Mr Mahama expressed concerns over the EC’s inconsistent application of rules, particularly in cases where election results were declared under controversial circumstances.

“There are a few outstanding issues arising from the election. As you are aware, nine constituencies are in dispute. And we think that the Electoral Commission should act in a principled manner,” Mr Mahama said.

Citing a precedent set during the 2020 elections, Mr Mahama reminded the EC of its stance that once results are declared, grievances should be addressed in court rather than through the commission.

He criticised what he perceived as a departure from this standard, referencing situations in which declarations were made under duress or amid chaos.

“If people have a grievance, they must go to the courts and redress. We don’t think that the goalposts should be shifted depending on who is at the other end of the stick,” Mr Mahama stated.

While acknowledging one case where no declaration was made, Mr Mahama called on the EC to clarify the path forward, including whether a rerun is necessary. He emphasised that the commission’s actions must be guided by principles of fairness and justice.

“These issues must be resolved as quickly as possible so that we know what the outcome of the election is,” he urged.

The disputes in the nine constituencies have drawn national attention, with stakeholders closely monitoring the EC’s response to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
