Mama Love Foundation supports widows, youth with start-up capital

An Obuasi-based non-profit organisation, the Mama Love Foundation, has provided widows and youth in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region with start-up capital to help them establish their own businesses and build a better future.

A total of 50 young people and widows benefited from a GHS 50,000.00 initiative aimed at supporting them to become self-reliant entrepreneurs.

The gesture fulfilled a pledge by the Foundation to empower the less privileged and vulnerable within the Obuasi community.

The donation was presented during a youth and women empowerment summit organised by the Foundation in Obuasi on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The President of the Foundation, Rev. Love Konadu, noted that although many people were motivated to start their own businesses, they lacked the necessary resources.

The Foundation also made cash donations to some widows to cushion them and bring smiles to their faces. According to Rev. Konadu, most widows live in abject poverty and those with children struggle to provide even the most basic support.

“We are not oblivious of the struggles of widows in our society. As an NGO which supports the cause of women, we decided to intervene and lessen their plights,” she added.

Commendation

The Akrokerrihemaa of Obuasi, Nana Serwaa Bruwaa, commended the Mama Love Foundation for consistently supporting marginalised groups in society.

Admonishment

She encouraged women to venture into business and strive to become economically independent.

As a widow herself, Nana Serwaa Bruwaa said that, as part of her own efforts to support women, she had employed many of them on her 40-acre farm at Akrokerri.

“I am doing this to help our women to get decent livelihoods,” she said.

The Municipal Director of Legal Aid in Obuasi, Gertrude Coffie, condemned the inhumane treatment some widows endure in the country, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. She said her office remained open to the public and urged residents of Obuasi to make use of the services provided.

Citation

The Foundation also recognised and rewarded individuals and groups who have excelled in their fields of endeavour and those who have supported the empowerment of women.

Among the honourees were five women who successfully completed apprenticeship training through the Mama Love Foundation and are now working as full-time fashion designers.
