Man arrested for dealing in fake currencies

A young man has been arrested for allegedly possessing suspected fake Ghana cedi and US dollar notes in different denominations.

The suspect, Hafiz Abdulai Mohammed, who was arrested by a National Highway Patrol team, is now in the custody of the Nsawam Police in the Eastern Region.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, said Mohammed, 25, would be put before court after police investigations.

The notes

The currencies are made up of $9,400 in $100 denominations, all with the same serial number LB 21997022 C, and GH¢1,600 in GH¢50 denominations, with different serial numbers.

Two of the GH¢50 notes had EX 5644712 as their serial numbers, four had the same serial number EC 306959, while 10 had the serial number YE 2889402.

According to the police, three of the GH¢50 notes had the same serial number YE 3748213, four notes had XD 4920213, while nine had XD 1056843.

Mr Nketia-Yeboah said the currencies were yet to be sent to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for verification and authentication.

He cautioned the public to be vigilant and report owners of suspected fake notes to the nearest police station.
