Man kills daughter, commits suicide

It is unclear why Basinaa killed his daughter, identified as Erica Yelminga Dong Basinaa, after a dispute with his wife.

The oldest son of the deceased, Mr Jevise Dakura,  who witnessed the tragic incident, told the Daily Graphic at the Wa Regional Hospital that about 4 a.m. last Saturday, he overheard his father querying his stepmother over her alleged infidelity, among other family  issues.

He said that degenerated into a heated verbal exchange between husband and wife.

Dakura said although he intervened to resolve the differences, his father did not budge.

He said he left for his room, while his father entered the kitchen, adding that little did he know that his father had gone for a machete, a development which compelled him (Dakura), his siblings and their stepmother to take to their heels.

He said his father vented his spleen on little Erica, who was asleep in the room, by inflicting multiple wounds on her head and shoulder, killing her in the process.

Mr Dakura said his father later drank a substance suspected to be poison in an attempt to take his life, adding that on realising that the substance was proving ineffective, Basinaa decided to slit his throat.

According to Dakura, some neighbours and family members who had rushed to the house managed to overpower Basinaa and rushed him to the Wa Regional Hospital.

He said his father was receiving medical attention under police guard at the hospital but died around midday on Saturday.
