The workers wore red armbands, drummed and sang at the main entrance to the company's premises.

They accused the management of failing to agree with them on their redundancy packages after management arbitrarily shut down operations at the factory.

Stalled negotiations

The Vice Chairman of the local workers union, Mr. Raymond Atadze in an interview said ever since the management, a freezone licensed enterprise declared its intention to restructure and transfer its operations under another company within the Crown Holdings, Inc., workers have sought to discuss their severance package but to no avail.

He said negotiations on their severances packages due the 42 workers commenced last year and till date has been inconclusive adding that the matter had been referred to the National Labour Commission and has since been pending.

He said workers found it strange to have returned to work only to find a notice signed by management to the effect that the factory has been shut until further notice.

"I wonder why the management, is preventing us from enjoying our constitutional rights. We will continue demonstrating until our demands are met,” he said

Meanwhile, armed guards from private security firm, G4S have been detailed to guard the factory, while workers demonstrated outside the gates.
