The congress to be held on the theme “Out-door Mathematics” will also deliberate on ways to relate Mathematics taught in the classroom to everyday life.

The President of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Prof. Sitsofe E. Anku,  told the Daily Graphic that members from all over the country were expected to attend the congress.

He said the meeting would also be used to mark the National Mathematics Day and inaugurate new executives of the National Association of Mathematics Students.

He explained that the theme was in line with the society’s objective to make Mathematics simpler and practical for students.

Applying maths

“There are lots of theories in teaching Mathematics so students do not see the relevance of its application to real life and its importance”, Prof. Anku said.

Although it is one of the compulsory subjects in both junior and senior high schools, Prof. Anku said most students did not show interest in Maths, adding that, “they usually learn it for examination’s sake after which they forget all about it (chew and pour).”

As part of the society’s efforts to make students love Maths, Prof. Anku said the society was collaborating with the Ministry of Education to train Maths teachers on new and practical ways of teaching the subject.
