Melcom donates ambulance to 37 hospital

The ambulance was a present to mark the 75th birthday of the Group Chairman of Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Baghwan Ramchand Kubhchandani.

“When we celebrate our birthdays, we expect people to give us gifts but today there is a shift in paradigm,” said Mr Kubhchandani at the presentation ceremony.

He was of the view that individuals and corporate entities needed to assist in the delivery of quality and accessible healthcare.

The Director of Communications of the Melcom Group, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, said the donation was also to honour the hardworking doctors, nurses, drivers, lab technicians and the administrative staff of the hospital for their relentless efforts at taking care of the hundreds of sick people who attended the hospital daily.

“We also want to show our gratitude to all Ghanaians for the support they gave us a year ago during the tragic incident of our Achimota branch,” said Mr Avenorgbo.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Vice Admiral Matthew Quarshie, commended Melcom Group of Companies for the support.

Meanwhile, a solemn ceremony was held in Accra in memory of the 13 people who lost their lives in the Melcom disaster which also injured 81 others.

At exactly 9:45a.m., a minute’s silence was observed for the victims.

The staff, some dressed in black and white, sang hymns and prayed for the lost souls, made up of staff and shoppers who met their untimely death in the tragedy that happened on November 7, 2012.

Some surviving victims who turned up for the event could not control their tears as they sobbed when the names of the deceased staff were called out.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Chairman of the Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Bagwan Kubchandani, said management had fulfilled all obligations to the victims as required by law.

On November 7, last year, 13 lives were lost and more than 70 people trapped when the Melcom Shopping Mall at Achimota suddenly collapsed.

The six-storey building collapsed about 9:45a.m., trapping workers and shoppers.
