Minister advises young women to dream big

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Dr Hanna Louisa Bissiw, has advised young women to draw inspiration from women in authority and look up to them to aspire to higher heights.

She advised them to not concentrate their efforts on acquiring wealth at a tender age but rather gear their efforts at studying hard to attain appreciable education and seek employment to enable them to become self-sufficient to live comfortable lives.

Forum for women

The deputy minister offered the advice at a day’s forum held for a women’s group at Fijai in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

The forum, on the theme: “The Ghanaian woman in reshaping and sustaining our democracy,” was organised by the Frontier Movement for Democracy (NFMD), a non-governmental organisation, that has interest in sensitising the public to their rights and responsibilities.

Dr Bissiw said for young women to grow to become responsible adults, mature women and mothers must ensure that they were brought up in a civil and disciplined manner.

That, she said, called for creating a congenial atmosphere for the training of girls, while women also needed to support men in educating their children to achieve their aim.

Single mothers

For single mothers, the minister noted that though their situation was stressful, they should resist the temptation of encouraging their girls to indulge in immoral activities, since doing that would affect them negatively.

During an open forum, most of the participants appealed for loans to expand their businesses.

Mr Marshall Ackumey, Coordinating Secretary of the NFMD, said the organisation aimed at educating the public on their rights and responsibilities and to inculcate in them a high sense of awareness of human rights.
