Healthcare managers receive training

The Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia, has asked various healthcare organisations in West Africa to do away with alien policies that do not improve healthcare delivery in Africa.

He said one of the effective ways of raising the quality of healthcare delivery in Africa was for the various healthcare institutions in the West African sub-region to work as a united team to identify strategies that would produce results.

Mr Segbefia said these at the opening ceremony of a one-week training programme for managers of healthcare institutions in the sub-region.

The programme, dubbed “Management of Development Institute Programme (MDI)”, is taking place at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and being attended by 38 participants from Ghana, Cameroun, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The programme had been designed to enhance the leadership and management skills of programme managers to implement their stated national health priorities.

It is being funded by Johnson and Johnson, a leading manufacturer of healthcare products.

We need results

Mr Segbefia said over the past years, billions of dollars had been spent to enhance the healthcare delivery on the continent with little results achieved.

“There appears to be a shift from input-focus to result focus, with people wanting to see results now, while there is clearly a need for improved corporate governance and to reduce corruption and misuse of funds,” he said.

Mr Segbefia stated that the only way for the African continent to attain its development goals was for it to enhance its health sector, adding that “the MDI aims at attaining that goal.”

He said since the MDI programme commenced, nearly 831 participants from 32 African countries had graduated from it.

GIMPA committed

In his welcome address, the Rector of GIMPA, Professor Franklyn Manu, said the programme was aimed at equipping managers of healthcare organisations in the sub-region with the relevant skills and modern tools to improve healthcare delivery.

He said over the past years, GIMPA had championed the campaign for the improvement of the healthcare sector on the continent, adding that the institution would continue to support such initiative.

a representative of Johnson and Johnson, Mr Rene Kiamba, gave the assurance that the company would continue to support and invest in the healthcare sector on the continent.

He, therefore, called on the participants to take advantage of the programme to upgrade their skills and use their knowledge to contribute towards the growth of the continent.
