He said plastic waste made soils infertile, left the society dirty and had health and economic implications on the country.

Nii Agbo was speaking at a ceremony in Accra to commemorate the efforts of one Madam Esther Vanderpuye, a resident of Korle Gonno, a suburb of Accra for making it a point to collect plastic waste in and around her community.

He said people like, Madam Esther Vanderpuye needed to be encouraged in order for her to help her community by teaching them how to dispose of plastic waste.

Nii Agbo called on Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to encourage and support Madam Vanderpuyeto to continue with the good work she was doing for mother Ghana.

Madam Vanderpuye said she started the plastic waste collection business 15 years ago, when sachet water engulfed the city and very little was done about how the waste could be disposed of.

She said the plastic waste she collects are sent to a factory in Tema, where it is recycled into other plastic materials for use by the society.

She said her major challenge had been how to pay her workers and the means to transport the waste.

Madam Vanderpuye said she had three corporate entities, which adopted her business as part of their corporate social responsibilities.

She appealed to the AMA and central government to support her business in order for her to be able to continue the good course she has taken.
