Ministry will continue to empower women - Nana Oye

On the occasion of Mother's Day, which was celebrated yesterday, May 8, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, indicated that the ministry and its stakeholders were making headway through advocacy to change some cultural practices that infringed on the rights of women and children before the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.

She assured women that their labour would certainly not be in vain. She also stated that the ministry would continue to do all within its power to create the enabling legal environment for all Ghanaian women.

“Our social protection programmes will continue to target women in extremely poor rural communities,” a release issued by the minister stated.

Rural poor

She said research had shown that the local economies of the rural poor were being turned around by the injection of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme grants into those communities.

“We shall continue to expand that programme to reach more women so that their children and grandchildren can remain in school and receive good health care,” the statement said.

“LEAP 1000 will take care of the extremely poor pregnant women. Our agenda is that every woman should receive her joy in full on delivery and that their children must be in good health,” she added.

“I congratulate every woman on their resilience, fortitude and hard work. All women are dear to my heart and, therefore, I see this day as a very special day to give a standing ovation to all Ghanaian women across the country,” Nana Oye said.

“I want to assure you that there is hope for the Ghanaian woman living anywhere in this country. I salute all women for their hard work and wish you a special happy Mother’s Day,” she said.
