MMT staff allege mismanagement and call for heads to roll

Workers of the Metro Mass Transit Company Limited (MMT) Tuesday morning embarked on a sit-down strike to protest what they describe as mismanagement of the company.

According to them, misappropriation of funds by management had left the company in debt and specifically mentioned an amount of GH¢3.5 million owed the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL).

They are therefore calling on government to change the management of the company to help prevent its collapse.

When Graphic Online got to the offices of the MMT Tuesday morning, most of the buses had been parked while staff were seen idling.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, some of the workers told Graphic Online that the strike was necessitated due to the union’s failure to address the myriad of challenges facing them.

The workers claimed that their “paltry” salaries were delayed while management chose to pay non-workers.

“We want the Union to explain to us what is happening here because we don’t understand why they are silent.  MMT has never increased fares anytime there is an increase but this time around MMT has increased fares.”

“What worries me most is that they are paying non-workers and monies are getting missing at the office (sic).”

“We are calling for a change of management because our salaries keep delaying and when we ask we are told there is no money yet the buses are on the road working (sic).”

The workers are therefore calling on government to change the management of the company to prevent its collapse.

“We need new management to man MMT because this current administration does not seek the interest of the company.”

The leaders of the workers later convinced the workers to go back to work ahead of a scheduled meeting with management on Wednesday.

Efforts to get a comment by management proved futile as no one was ready to respond.

The Public Relations Officer of MMT, Bernice Akologo later told Graphic Online that management was not aware of the issues raised by the workers and that they would meet with the leadership of the workers.
