The environmental sanitation project is to check bad environmental practices that result in diseases such as cholera, malaria and typhoid fever, among others.

Repair of sewer lines

As part of the project, deteriorated sewer lines in selected electoral areas have been replaced to address sanitary problems  in the constituency. Areas that have benefited from the project so far include the Communities 7, 8 and 4 electoral areas.

Maintenance gangs from the Tema Metropolitan Area (TMA) were also engaged to clear several choked sewer lines at Community 7 Union Electoral Area, while new underground pipes were laid at Community 4 GTP Number 2 Primary School area to solve the sewage problems.  The Community 4 Police Station environs which have experienced several sewage spills over the past four years also received attention.

The MP explained that choked sewer lines continued to be a major problem in Tema in general and his constituency in particular, hence the move to prioritise the maintenance and replacement of the lines to tackle the problem.

A cross section of residents interviewed by the Daily Graphic said they had had to live with the choked sewer lines which sometimes led to spillage of faecal matter into their homes.

High fees

Mr Ian Okwei, a resident of Tema, said in spite of the payment of between GH¢80 and GH¢150 to the TMA as sewage maintenance fees by each household annually, some of the residents were forced to pay extra sums ranging from GH¢ 200 per household to the waste management gang to repair the sewer lines anytime they got choked.

“Some households who cannot afford to pay would also have to queue for several months for their turn due to inadequate personnel and logistics,” he said.
